Is your company migrating from an existing NAV system to the latest MS Dynamics NAV 2013? Or is it moving on from another ERP software to the MS Dynamics NAV software? In either case the most elementary and important concern will be managing data and migrating it safely to the new system. Microsoft has a comprehensive system for data migration that there is no data loss during the process and the current data is optimized so that it can be accessed in the new system.
Considerations Before Microsoft Dynamics NAV Data Migration
When you are migrating large volume of data then it would be best to optimize it by –
- Compressing ledger data using the NAV tools
- Cleaning unnecessary data
You must realize that there will be a great difference between the latest version of Dynamics NAV and its other versions or other ERP systems. This in itself poses numerous challenges as most programs will be upgraded versions and the data has to be optimized to make them compatible.
Add-on Upgrades
If you have opted for some add-on features along with the NAV software, the relating data has to be migrated to t separately. Dynamics NAV has a standard upgrade toolkit which is good for general migration purposes, but may fall inadequate in many areas. Most add-on manufacturers provide with toolkits for data migration, however, moving customized data is the responsibility of the developer. They will create tools for migrating the customized data separately.
Data Migration process
When data is being migrated to Dynamics NAV, it is first tested on the upgraded system where a test run is done on the upgrade toolkit and custom upgrade utilities are created. Once the testing has been done, the data is upgraded and moved to the new system. For the upgrade, following procedures are followed –
- Old customized are merged with the new version and any custom code is transferred to the new Dynamics NAV version
- The upgrade toolkit is run where first, the necessary data is moved to temporary tables and then to the tables on the new version
